- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- Salt to taste
Batter
- 1 cup Southern Drawl Fish Fry Batter
- 3/4–1 cup cold water
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1/2 tsp paprika (optional)
For Frying
- Oil for frying (vegetable, peanut, or canola)
Creamy Gravy
- 2 tbsp drippings or butter
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 2 cups milk
- Salt & pepper to taste
How to Make It
- Prepare the steak: Pat steaks dry. Season both sides with garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, and salt.
- Make the batter: In a bowl, mix Southern Drawl Fish Fry Batter with cold water, garlic powder, black pepper, and paprika (if using). Stir until smooth.
- Dredge the steak: Dip each steak into the batter, making sure it’s fully coated. Let any excess batter drip off.
- Heat the oil: Heat oil in a large cast iron skillet over medium-high heat to 350°F (175°C).
- Fry to golden brown: Fry steaks for 3–4 minutes per side, until deep golden brown and crispy. Internal temp should reach 145°F. Drain on a rack or paper towels.
- Make the gravy: In the same skillet, add butter or drippings. Whisk in flour and cook for 1 minute. Slowly whisk in milk. Season with salt and pepper. Simmer until thickened.
- Serve & enjoy: Spoon creamy gravy over the hot chicken fried steak and serve immediately. Enjoy with your favorite Southern sides!
